Final Fantasy XIII has been in development since roughly 2004. Square Enix has gone on record saying the originally being developed for the Playstation 2, but after they created the Final Fantasy VII Technical Demo for PS3 for May 2005's E3, they moved the the project from PS2 development to PS3.

The main character of Final Fantasy XIII, Lightning. The game is being developed using Square Enix's newest game engine, the Crystal Tools, formerly the White Engine. Information on the game's story and gameplay have been scarce since its unveiling, but a few tidbits are known. Lighting is the female lead, fighting against the forces of Cocoon, a civilization floating over the world of Pulse. Beings known as l'Cie created much of the world, including Cocoon. The l'Cie also choose certain individuals to fulfill unknown tasks, thus turning the individuals into fal'Cie. fal'Cie however are seen as doomed, and when Lightning and her comrades become fal'Cie, they find themselves in a fight for their lives against both the forces of Cocoon, who mean to expel all fal'Cie from Cocoon, and the l'Cie themselves.

A battle in Final Fantasy XIII. The developers designing and producing Final Fantasy XIII have gone on to say that they want to revolutionize the RPG formula. They're looking at the bare bones of it, the "you go into town, talk to people, go out of town, enter battles" (FFXIII Producer, Yoshinori Kitase), and they're looking to reinvigorate that flow in particular. Furthermore, Square Enix is looking to simulate the incredible fast pace of the cinematic battles from Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children in Final Fantasy XIII. The Battle Director of FFX is handing the development of FFXIII's Battle System.
